Cacchi (persimmon) are now in season and available at vegetable stands throughout Rome. Although you could wash one at a nearby fountain most locals remove the skin and cut the delicious sweet inner pulp into slices. The flavor is similar to a Mango and quite addictive. There are generally two types available: a soft, dark version that can be eaten with a spoon and a harder, brighter kind that won’t get hands sticky but may make you wish you had a pocket knife. If you forgot yours visit a tabacchi shop.
